EMDR is a treatment modality that removes the "emotional charge" from distressing memories and events. Post treatment, clients are able to retrieve details about the previously triggering events without any negative effects. This allows clients to put these events in the past. As a result the details of the distressing memory are stored as facts, much like details about what you ate for breakfast are stored, in your declarative memory.
EMDR involves pairing eye movements (using lights) with the activation of memories through a series of therapist directed questions. This process activates the client's prefrontal cortex, the amygdala, and the hippocampus whose functions are information processing, emotional processing, and memory storage, respectively. The lights serve as a sensory stimulus which buffers the client from an over-activation of the amygdala, this combined with grounding skills, and the therapeutic safe space, protect the client from sympathetic nervous system activation (aka fight/flight/freeze system).
